Giving, Receiving & The Power of WE!

Giving, Receiving and the Power of WE!

My Grade Three teacher was wonderful. Her name was Miss Hill. She drove a little punchbug/ladybug like vehicle, wore swishy dresses with bright flowers, and gave us oodles of stickers and compliments. The first poem I remember writing was in Miss Hill’s class. It was called “Rain”. I entered the poem in the local summer fair and won a prize. I would happily line up for recess. I would sing on my way to the bathroom. I felt alive and free and completely me. I loved Miss Hill.

It was the end of the school year and I am standing in front of the china cabinet in our dining room. It is a Saturday. I am wanting to give Miss Hill a gift; something special to tell her how amazing, awesome and wonderful she is. I want to give her something that lets her know “I don’t want grade three to end”. As an 8 year old, your family’s own curiosity shop in the china cabinet is a wonderful place to find the perfect gift.

Two crystal glass dog figurines rested side by side in the cabinet. I took one in my hands. It was beautiful. It reminded me of the glass slipper in Cinderella. I wanted to give this to Miss Hill. [Plus we had two of them, so why not share].

I asked my mom if I could give Miss Hill this dog as a gift. I knew this dog was special. Only special things went in the china cabinet. Things in the china cabinet came out for special dinners, invited guests and celebratory events. I don’t remember the discussion. I don’t remember how she made her decision. But I do remember her answer: YES!

I wrapped the crystal dog with white tissue paper and placed it carefully in a box. I wrote my own card. Wrapped the gift and gave it to her on the last day of school. She had oodles of gifts on her desk. She smiled when she opened every one. She took time with all of us. We all watched with excitement as she opened every gift. We all felt special – including Miss Hill.

I simply gave. And she received with kindness. As she received my gift, I received even more. It was a magical moment. The magic for me came in the giving AND the receiving.

I found out later that the crystal dogs were collector’s items and worth a lot of money. I worried (for a moment) if mom would be upset or mad; as I gave one of the dogs away? There was more meaning and magic in the giving and receiving of ourselves, than the value of the crystal. It was a beautiful memory for me.

The magic of giving is not to get anything in return, but to simply give for the gift of giving and receiving ourselves just as we are.

When we allow ourselves to “give of ourselves” and to receive another just as they are – then we feel welcomed, received and fully allowed to be ourselves.

Freedom abounds when we give without expectation. Possibility expands when we receive without agenda.

What are you willing to receive? How do you start to nurture and care for yourself? When you allow yourself to truly receive, you say YES to truly nurture and care for you. When was the last time that happened in your day, your week, your life?

Gary Douglas, Founder of Access Consciousness® says, “Receiving is not done on this planet. Doing, doing, doing in order to make sure you don’t have to receive is how most people lie their life. This has to change. You have to be willing to receive if you are going to have the life you truly desire.”

My “crystal dog moment” was a symbol of truly receiving myself, my magic and awesomeness. Miss Hill helped to awaken that in me and bring that into awareness. As Miss Hill shone and shared her light, joy and creativity with us in the classroom; we were inspired to do the same.

What if being the energy of what’s possible and being you was the invitation for others to choose more?

What if that is a true contribution we can all be?

What if the greatest gift you have to offer the planet, is you being you?
