Christmas is coming. Joy to the world. Silent Night. Wrapping Presents. Shopping. Entering into greater debt. More presents. More family obligations. Emotional heaviness. WAIT! Christmas should feel light, joy-filled, and abundant. Christmas is about giving and receiving. Not about gifts and stuff, but about the gifts of the heart. We get off track and off kilter. We become out of alignment with what giving and receiving is all about. We suck up the consumerism pressure machine of “I am not worthy unless I give more, buy more, and be more!!! So before Santa arrives, or the holy child is born, lets take a moment – a breath, and enter into a true “silent night” and wonder: HOW WILL GIVING AND RECEIVING EXPRESS ITSELF FOR ME THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?
Giving and Receiving is one of the richest bravest practices that we can do. Giving and Receiving develops our compassion – for ourselves and for others. Let’s face it… we are all wounded and suffering on some level and needing healing. The trick with giving and receiving – is how to practice both.
It feels damn good to GIVE! Now the interesting thing about giving, is that the receiver often thinks there is a “catch”, or something they have to do, or give back in return. It is a wonderful surprise to watch their faces when they know this is a treat for them without expectation or obligation. I am giving for the pure joy of giving because they matter; you matter. Gifts of the heart recognize our core being and invite us into being seen, valued and vulnerable.
Brené Brown, in “The Gifts of Imperfection” shares about giving: “Until we can receive with an open heart, we’re never really giving with an open heart. When we attach judgment to receiving help, we knowingly or unknowingly attach judgement to giving help.”
What if I allowed myself to receive generosity and abundance? What if I let go of my doubt and fear? What if I released the barriers to receiving kindness and allowed generosity to flow through me – as both the giver and receiver? Damn that would feel good!!! How does it get any better than that?
What would authentic giving and receiving look like? Feel like? There would be no expectation of return. There would be no feeling of obligation in either direction. Giving with an open heart invites us to receive with an open heart as well. We feel seen, valued and witnessed. We are aware of how we make a difference in the lives of others. Giving and Receiving invites us to love ourselves and share that love.
“Of this, I am actually certain. After collecting thousands of stories, I’m willing to call this a fact: A deep sense of love and belonging is an irreducible need of all women, men, and children. We are biologically, cognitively, physically, and spiritually wired to love, to be loved, and to belong. When those needs are not met, we don’t function as we were meant to. We break. We fall apart. We numb. We ache. We hurt others. We get sick.”― Brené Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection
It is time to shake the beliefs of self-doubt, blame, guilt, shame, regret and fear. It is time to embrace our worth and generously share and receive that with others. You cannot buy that at Wal-Mart. You won’t find it on the shelves of your local grocery store. Your worth and your greatest gifts reside in the deep core and centre of your being. You will find it in the silence and stillness of your heart. You will find it in the dark longings of your soul; the longing to belong, to be loved, to be valued, and to be accepted.
My invitation: What if this Christmas, you gifted yourself the gifts of acceptance and love. And then gently petal-by-petal opened your heart up to sharing that with others. Your acceptance and love costs nothing and yet is priceless. It is the most valuable gift you can give yourself. Shop Less. Love More. You’re Worth It.
